Here the new Marionberry trellis by north Cora Drive gate.
Marionberries are a locally developed type of blackberry that is very productive. It is a type of berry that takes two years to come to full fruition.
The first year primicanes develop.
The second year the primicanes turn into floricanes, flower, and turn into berries. Meanwhile new floricanes grow under the fruiting canes for the next year's crop. At the end of the season the floricanes that have fruited turn brown and die and are pruned away to make room for next year's crop. The last year's primicanes are then transferred to higher on the trellis to fruit, making space at the bottom of the trellis for the new developing primicanes.
We expect our first big crop in 2026. This year we will grow new long primicanes while the tiny existing canes become this year's fruit bearing floricanes.
Raspberries also have a 2 year growth cycle. Kailash has a bunch of raspberry primicanes that will fruit next year. If they can be successfully transplanted to Annapurna we could have a crop of berries next year. The easiest space to plant them would be extending south along the sidewalk. That will allow passers by to graze on berries as they pass by.
